Selected to Design a Vision for the Shantou Inner Bay, China

OKRA landscape architects with Steffen Nijhuis selected to work on the Shantou Inner Bay Urban Design International Workshop.

We will be working with teams from Gensler, Aecom and the local government to develop different visions for the area, coordinated by the South China University of Technology and the Guangzhou City Planning & Design Survey Research Institute.

The area comprises the inner bay of Shantou. It covers an overall design area of 117 square kilometres, including 54 kilometres of the bay coast, the city centre’s urban area, harbour and the redeveloping of old industrial sites. The Shantou Estuary forms a valuable natural setting from the mountains to the river and the sea and faces the pressure of urbanisation and climate change. The objective is to develop a design vision for a resilient urban landscape for Shantou’s Inner Bay.

The urban planning and landscape architecture design will include implementation of multifunctional flood protection for river and sea, enlargement of green-blue structures, transit-oriented development and the generation of innovative urban typologies. The focus is on sustainable development, well-being and inclusive growth.

In recent years OKRA has designed several award-winning visions for a number of coastal sites along the Chinese coast.
